Sam Gouda is a Senior energy efficiency expert with over 20 years of experience in sustainable energy. He has a broad experience as team leader in international project financed by IFIs (ADB, EBRD, USAID, UNDP, REEEP) worldwide having worked in Russia and New Independent States, South-eastern Europe, Latin and Central America, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
Mr. Gouda has an extensive technical experience in performing energy efficiency related activities including market screening and positioning, risk assessment, client criteria selection and credit worthiness, energy audits, utility billing analysis, specifying and recommending energy efficient retrofits, calculating energy savings and avoided GHG emissions reduction, researching and qualifying new technology retrofits to determine their viability, energy software simulation modeling of buildings and preparing feasibility studies for facilities under Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC) as well as preparing and delivering interactive energy efficiency training programs for ESCOs, Utilities, Development Banks, Financial Institutions and Local Banks.
Sam has a strong experience as financial expert for Energy Efficiency Projects, having trained bank staff from different institutions (IIC, IDB) and generating knowledge on the role of energy efficiency and on energy efficiency opportunities from a final energy user and a bank perspective, on the barriers to energy efficiency implementation and on investment and financing alternatives. An example of this is his recently accomplished role as the Team Leader for a project financed by IFC (WB), Sustainable Energy Finance in Colombia.
Sam has Extensive experience in Energy Efficiency policy, having led the preparation of GEF Projects Documents as Prodoc, Namibia, UNDP, (September 2009 to January 2010) and Improving the Energy Efficiency of Lighting and Building Appliances, Egypt, UNDP (February 2012). Sam Gouda led the formulation process of the NEEP medium size project in full consultation and participation of the MME, UNDP and as well as other key stakeholders.
He has acquired a profound experience in negotiations and implementation of multi-million dollars ESCO and DSM related contracts with governments and the private sector.
Sam is an exceptional trainer, he has a proven record of using his Training of the Trainers education to design and deliver training programs and training material for companies, ESCOs and banks. In Colombia, he has trained a company that is currently implementing EE projects based on the ESCO model. Funded by USAID in Pakistan, he designed, developed and delivered an ESCO development program that included training for energy service companies to start and support their ESCO activities. In Central America he has coordinated the TA under Greenpyme Project, which aimed to support credit officers to identify and assess bankable projects related to EE and RE.
Sam is a registered Professional Engineer in Ontario, Canada and a B.Sc. in mechanical engineering (Zaggazig University, Cairo). He is a certified energy manager (C.E.M.) as designated by the Association of Energy Engineers, Atlanta, GA, USA.
